Tips for High Schoolers on Applying to Scholarships:

  1. Start Early: Begin researching and preparing your scholarship applications well in advance. Many scholarships have early deadlines, so starting early ensures you have ample time to gather necessary materials and submit strong applications.
  2. Stay Organized: Keep track of scholarship deadlines, requirements, and application materials in a dedicated folder or spreadsheet. Staying organized will help you stay on top of multiple applications and ensure you meet all deadlines.
  3. Tailor Your Applications: Customize each scholarship application to highlight your strengths and experiences that align with the scholarship criteria. Personalize your essays and statements to reflect the specific goals and values of the scholarship organization.
  4. Seek Recommendations: Ask teachers, counselors, and mentors for strong letters of recommendation. Provide them with ample time to write thoughtful and detailed recommendations that showcase your achievements and character.
  5. Write Compelling Essays: Craft well-written and compelling essays that tell your unique story. Be authentic, highlight your accomplishments, and explain how the scholarship will help you achieve your academic and career goals.
  6. Proofread and Edit: Carefully proofread and edit your applications to eliminate any errors or typos. A polished application demonstrates your attention to detail and professionalism.
  7. Apply to Multiple Scholarships: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to as many scholarships as you are eligible for to increase your chances of receiving financial aid.
  8. Follow Instructions: Adhere to all application instructions and guidelines provided by the scholarship organization. Failing to follow instructions could result in disqualification.
  9. If you are awarded, attend the event: Many of these scholarships request that the receiver attend the awarding ceremony. Plan to attend. It's a great chance to connect with community members who are making an impact and sometimes decisions around town and the potential to network for future opportunities whether it be for future scholarship awards, mentors, volunteer opportunities, careers etc.
