New Friends, New Goals: Schaumburg’s Summer Youth Run Club
Once school’s out, one question looming on parents’ minds is, “How can I keep my child engaged this summer?” Schaumburg’s Xtra Mile Running store has one solution for you – its free, the 2nd Annual Summer Youth Run Program!
Open to children 8-12 years old*, this program encourages children to not only meet new friends, but to train to run a 5K at the end of the summer. In addition to camaraderie, it’s a great opportunity for children to learn about setting – and surpassing – their own goals!
The program takes place two days a week from June 27 through August 24: Thursdays from 6:30PM – 7:30PM. and Saturdays from 8:00AM – 9:00AM. After a summer of learning proper running techniques, the children’s end goal is to run the “Race to Stop Hunger 5K” in Roselle on Saturday, August 24, 2019.
“This is a great summer activity for any child, whether they are a new or an experienced runner,” Chris Schiel, Xtra Mile Running General Manager, says. “The program is run by our dedicated and well-trained staff members, who want nothing more than to help children feel a sense of accomplishment through running. The best part for us is hearing how proud the children are of themselves.”
If you want to learn more, bring your child to the informational meeting on Thursday, June 6 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Xtra Mile Running, located at 1437 W. Schaumburg Rd., Schaumburg. The cost of the program is free—with the exception of race registrations. They also highly recommend that each child gets fitted for proper running shoes ($60), and a Youth Run Club tee-shirt ($20). Both items are available for purchase at the store.

*Older children are always welcome to run as well (or help motivate the younger participants). Those under 8 are welcome, too! They will just require a parent to attend the runs with them – be it by running, walking, or biking.
