The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 it was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton, a Nebraska journalist and politician. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques, but his most important legacy is Arbor Day.

The 40th Arbor Day Celebration is open to the public and light refreshments are available. Park District and Village dignitaries deliver remarks on the importance of trees to the community. In addition, the Futabakai Japanese School will be performing a celebration of the Cherry Blossom which occurs in the springtime. The Arbor Day Drawing Contest winners are announced and their art work is displayed.
