Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale - Review

By Marcela Naste, publisher for Schaumburg - Hoffman Estates February 10, 2020

A simple trip to the laundromat is about to become an exciting adventure!

With the long winter that is still going, one of the option when planning for an activity for your kids, can be to go and see the great performance of Northbrook Theatre for Young Audiences of Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary MusicalBased on the book, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems, the production tells the story of what happens when a favorite stuffed bunny is left behind at the laundromat. The family-friendly musical features singing, action and plenty of dancing laundry!

The musical cleverly expands on key story elements, including a dance with a larger-than-life Knuffle Bunny that expresses the main character’s attachment to the toy. Audiences also will be treated to a spectacular use of puppetry throughout the show. The performance lasts 40 minutes, without intermission. It wasn’t too long for the little ones present in the auditorium, the music and sounds effect were in perfect synchronization with the acting piece, enough to keep the children focused on the stage and in their seats. The audience-cast interaction was perfect for this kind of story.

It’s so much fun watching objects come to life as giant toys, animals and even over sized, out-of-control laundry,” Director Randy White said. “We also get to meet a range of additional neighborhood residents, including the singing, dancing denizens of the local laundromat. And finally, there is a lovely guest appearance by Willems’ much-loved bus-driving pigeon!

The show is amazing and a no miss for you and your kids of all ages. They offer group discounts, birthday party packages and weekday performances for schools and groups, which include curtain talks with the actors. And the Best part, after the performance, the actors come into the lobby for a “Meet and Greet” with audience members.

Tips to consider while planning to attend the play:

  •  Dress comfortable. Try to come with at least 15 minutes prior the play starts.
  •  You can buy the tickets online or in person (but do call prior, to be sure there are available tickets).
  •  If you think your little one will not sit quietly during the show, try and prepare him prior, by reading together the book and once you will get on your seats, identify on the stage resemblances with what you read.
  •  The performance will last only 40 minutes, with no intermission, so don't bring any snacks, in order to avoid any disturbing sounds during the show, and making a mess under the chairs.
  •  Show your appreciation and enthusiasm for the performance by providing close, quiet attention, as well as participation and applause at the proper times. Remind kids that part of being a good audience member is not talking or getting up during a performance unless it’s a real emergency.
