“The most interesting people you’ll find are ones that don’t fit into your average cardboard box. They’ll make what they need, they’ll make their own boxes.” - Dr. Temple Grandin.
Each child is unique, and for some, the unique way in which they’re wired translates into sensitivities that others may not understand. Sometimes it’s noise. Other times it’s bright lights or too much activity going on around them. They still want to participate, they just need to do it in their own way. These children may have autism spectrum disorders or sensory processing issues, or they may be differently-abled. For those who “don’t fit into your average cardboard box,” many libraries, park districts and schools have developed adaptive programs and offer equipment to help children engage in a way that is comfortable for them.
At the Schaumburg Township District Library, adaptive programs are held regularly and include storytime, play group, autism movement therapy, and puppet shows. The structure includes a visual schedule, books, soft music and lighting, and movement activities. To further help participants stay within their comfort zones, the library supplies fidget toys and noise reduction earmuffs. And if a child requires special accommodations, his or her parent may call the library to make arrangements.
When a child with sensory processing issues feels overwhelmed or agitated by the lights, sounds, and activities around them, they can find a peaceful sanctuary in the library’s Mother’s Room. Also used by nursing mothers, the Mother’s Room provides a quiet haven with soft lighting, sparse décor, and pastel colors. This type of room is becoming a common addition to many public buildings.
Children are children, whether they feel at home in a fast-paced, high-energy environment or need something a bit more tranquil. Increased awareness of their differences is fostering more and better ways to make them comfortable. At the Schaumburg Township District Library, we plan to continue seeking programs, activities, and equipment to accommodate children of all abilities.
