Cat in the Hat, by Dr Seuss - Review

By Marcela Naste, publisher for Schaumburg - Hoffman Estates October 21, 2019

Who hasn't heard of Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat book? But, who has seen a live performance of this marvelous book? Until Nov 3rd, 2019 Northbrook Park District has this amazing show performed by the Northbrook Theatre for Young Audiences. They are a professional theatre company exclusively presenting high quality productions for youth and family audiences.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of an eccentric stranger (who's a cat!) comes into the house of two young children, Sally and Sam, who are having a very dull day. Their mother is out, and when the Cat comes in, he reassures the kids that their mother won't mind him or his tricks!

From the moment you enter into the theater you are welcomed by the open stage, without curtains, very homey arranged, but in a fantastic blue light, which captures your attention. The actors are professional equity actors including an aerialist, a contortionist, and other circus type performers. The performance lasts 40 minutes, without intermission. It wasn’t too long for the little ones present in the auditorium, the music and sounds effect were in perfect synchronization with the acting piece, enough to keep the children focused on the stage and in their seats. The audience-cast interaction was perfect for this kind of story.

The show is amazing and a no miss for you and your kids of all ages. They offer group discounts, birthday party packages and weekday performances for schools and groups, which include curtain talks with the actors. And the Best part, after the performance, the actors come into the lobby for a “Meet and Greet” with audience members.

Tips to consider while planning to attend the play:

  •  Dress comfortable. Try to come with at least 15 minutes prior the play starts.
  •  You can buy the tickets online or in person (but do call prior, to be sure there are available tickets).
  •  If you think your little one will not sit quietly during the show, try and prepare him prior, by reading together the book and once you will get on your seats, identify on the stage resemblances with what you read.
  •  The performance will last only 40 minutes, with no intermission, so don't bring any snacks, in order to avoid any disturbing sounds during the show, and making a mess under the chairs.
  •  Show your appreciation and enthusiasm for the performance by providing close, quiet attention, as well as participation and applause at the proper times. Remind kids that part of being a good audience member is not talking or getting up during a performance unless it’s a real emergency.
  •  If its a nice weather on the day of the show, do come prepared to enjoy some time in the local park outside the theater. The Park District has a nice park right near the parking lot, it is restricted, so everybody can enjoy their time in the park.
