Summer learning loss is real.
Research from National Summer Learning Association shows:
- Many students lose two to three months of reading and math skills every summer.
- 9 out of 10 teachers spend at least three weeks re-teaching lessons at the start of the school year.
But it’s not all bad news. NSLA’s research also shows:
- Students with high participation in voluntary summer learning programs experience benefits in math and reading skills.
That’s where your library can help! Schaumburg Township District Library’s Summer Challenge gives you free access to a summer-long learning program, with emphasis on reading and engaging activities that you can do right here in our community.
Here’s how you can make the most of the Summer Challenge:
- Get the whole family involved.Research showsthat students whose parents are also actively engaged in a summer learning program experience less learning loss.
- Let your student choose what they read but encourage variety. Giving them the choice will help keep them interested in reading. And don’t worry, with more than 140,000 books for kids and teens available between three library locations, Schaumburg Library has plenty of variety for your student to choose from.
- Complete the Challenge. Completing the Summer Challenge will keep your student involved in a learning program throughout the summer…and give them opportunities to earn more badges and win a prize!
This year's Summer Challenge brings back cartoon favorites like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Marvin the Martian – all created by legendary animator Chuck Jones.
That’s why Schaumburg Library is calling this year’s Summer Challenge the Chuck Jones Summer of Creativity!
