College Nannies Ideas to Prevent Bullying

By College Nannies + Sitters + Tutor June 11, 2019

With Summer come more time for kids to be kids and occasionally bullying happens. Teaching our kids to treat others how we want to be treated is only one way to address the issue—teaching them to stand up to bullying and encourage their peers to do the same, is a more effective way to stop the unfortunate trend altogether.

Talk to Your Kids

Have an open conversation with your kids to make sure they understand what bullying is and the effects it could have on their peers. Allow them to ask questions and ask them what they would do if they were put in a situation where bullying was taking place. Let them know that if they are ever being bullied, there are people they can talk to about dealing with the problem. Make sure they understand that it is unacceptable behavior, and it’s okay to ask for help if they feel uncomfortable.

Tune in to Their Lives

Make sure you are keeping up with the activities and friends of your children. Ask them about their day, and encourage them to join after school activities, organizations, sports teams or clubs. If your child spends their time in healthy, encouraging environments, that will lessen the chance of them becoming victims of bullying.

Keep an Eye on the Community and School News

Always be paying attention to what’s going on in your child’s school as well as the local community. Keeping tabs on events in within the community will allow you to remain aware of what is going on in your child’s life. Bullying is very common and may show up as a story in your community newspaper or school’s monthly newsletter if an issue become more serious. If you are concerned about something, make sure to talk to your children about it. Ask them if they had knowledge of the issue, and how they have been dealing with it.

Bullying is all too common today. Encourage your children to acknowledge the issue and address it when the opportunity presents itself. Make sure that they understand what bullying is, and that they have options if they ever fall victim of an uncomfortable situation.
