Earth Day Celebration - "a family tradition"

By Marcela Naste, publisher for Schaumburg - Hoffman Estates April 18, 2019

Every year we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd. Its is a day to learn about, and discuss environmental issues, and ways we can work together to save earth for future generations. This Day is providing us a great opportunity to talk with our kids about the environment, and things we can personally do, to be more environmentally friendly. :-)

Here are some nice activities we can do with our families on this day:

Plant a Tree -> we all know about the many benefits trees are providing us; this is why, planting a tree with our kids in our yard, or participating in a tree planting project in the community, its a perfect Earth Day activity.

Go on a Nature Walk - > we are lucky enough to be surrounded with many forests, full of trails, wild life, birds, beautiful sights you can see along the way. So, take your kids and your camera, a bike/stroller/ scooter and enjoy the walk!

Attend the Recycle event at  Schaumburg Boomers Stadium from April 20. This will be a great opportunity to show our kids what is recycle all about, and you can pick together what things to take to recycling.

Enjoy Earth Day Party at Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley on April 28. Celebrate your connection to the Earth with games, crafts, free wildflower seedlings, *birdhouse building, *worm composting construction, a live hawk and owl display, and more other activities.

Plant a Garden - > Growing your own vegetables and herbs is a great way to reduce your environmental footprint, and is a wonderful activity for the whole family. I personally rent each year a garden plot from Schaumburg Park district at Olympic Park and involve my oldest girl during all the process. We already started last week, planting seeds of onions, lettuces, carrots and radishes. We cannot wait to get our garden full of vegetables, but about this, in a another article. :)

Participate to the Environmental Fair at Schaumburg Public Library - > All ages can experience fun demos and workshops related to protecting our environment.

Make Crafts with Recycled Materials or Newspaper (the article is available on our website) - > the internet is full of examples, so for rainy days, this can be a great opportunity to make this kind of crafts!

I hope my suggestions will be helpful and you will enjoy Earth Day in a pleasant way with your kids!
